My students are learning “Bubble Gum Words” (Dr. Edward B. Fry words) this year in my first grade classroom to help them become more fluent readers. Bubble Gum Words are made up of 10 sheets of words. Each sheet has 5 columns of 20 words for a total of 100 words per sheet. I have color coded the sheets and each sheet has a matching gum ball machine with 5 gum balls. When students master a column of words on their sheet they color in a gum ball in their machine. When all 5 columns are mastered they will move on to the next word list that will be a different color and get a matching gum ball machine. As a special treat, I give students a gum ball for mastering the whole sheet of words and moving on to a new sheet. 🙂 This is working great in my classroom and my students are moving through the lists pretty quickly! They love moving onto a new sheet and getting a new, different colored machine! 🙂
