My school practices Responsive Classroom techniques. In the beginning of the year, the students brainstorm and discuss their hopes and dreams for the school year. Every year I try to think of a different way for them to publish their writing, and this year they wrote a short essay by following the steps of the writing process. Then I had a conversation with them about mixing paint & pattern to create their backgrounds. I photographed them pretending to be climbing a ladder, and printed them so the students could create the visual of them climbing the ladder in the night sky to their dreams. Their parents also filled out their hopes and dreams for the students on star templates. This is the first of many ways I will have students create art to publish their writing.
