In a combo class with 3rd and 4th graders, keeping track of where every “body” is can become chaotic, unless of course, you strategically created an organized check-in and safety system like the one you see in the picture. At the end of every day, a student leader puts all magnetic numbered squares back on the “gone for the day” board to show that everyone has left the classroom. As students walk into the room in the morning, they move their brightly colored magnets to the respective lunch board to communicate if they are buying lunch from school or if they’ve brought one from home. Serving as a dual safety system, students are able to move their number magnets to the “office,” “restroom,” or “other” section to communicate where they are so that the teacher is aware at all times when need be. Finally, the brightly colored squares can be seen from just about any place in the classroom which is a great tool for the teacher to do the attendance and lunch count for the day and to know the students’ whereabouts at any given time. Brighter is better, always!
